The Management of the University of Uyo has over time observed that there is a large number of indigent students who are otherwise bright, sometimes academically outstanding, but whose low socio-economic status renders them incapable of supporting themselves through their studies in the University. There is a great need to salvage such students from waste for lack of funds. To do this, Management has conceptualized a scheme tagged “The Hope Scheme”, designed to see to it that no student of the University of Uyo with a promising academic prospect is allowed to waste and unable to graduate for reasons of economic disadvantage.

The scheme has the following components:

1.        Student's Work Scheme: This is conceived to engage some students for not more than two hours a day in doing productive work for the University. In return, such student under this segment would be paid a monthly stipend of N10, 000.00. At take-off, this would involve 100 students and would cost the University N12, 000,000.00 (twelve million Naira) or US$80, 000.00 in the first year.

2.             Free Scholarship Category: This would involve a grant of N30, 000.00 a year to the students under this segment or US$200 equivalent for 200 students. The students under this category should have a CGPA of 3.50 and above in a 5.0 scale rating. This would cost the University N6, 000,000.00 (Six million Naira) or US$40, 000.00 equivalent in the first year.

3.             Financial Assistance/Interest Free Loan Category: This category would involve setting aside N20, 000.00 (Twenty thousand Naira) or US$120 equivalent per student per year for 200 students in the first year, as loan. This would add up to N4, 000,000.00 (Four million Naira) or US$25, 000.00 equivalent per year to the University.

The University intends to use a rigorous but completely transparent process to select students who will benefit from the scheme. This is basically to cater for the welfare of the students of the University of Uyo. The University is calling upon stakeholders, staff, students and the general public to support this very modest beginning which can give hope to a good number of our financially less endowed students.
